Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announced the revision of its Headline Key Performance Indicators amidst evolving market dynamics and a challenging operational environment. The Group also announced the implementation of its Performance Improvement Programme 2018 (PIP 2018) – a continuation of its transformation journey, now in its 4th wave. TM also introduced new Broadband plans in its ongoing efforts to provide affordable broadband services to the nation, and in support of national aspirations.
Datuk Bazlan Osman, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer, TM commented on the announcement: “We are currently facing numerous challenges to the business namely intensifying competition; increasing business and operating costs; cautious enterprise spending as well as increasing regulatory pressures. Given these headwinds, we are revising our Headline KPIs for 2018 – to an expected revenue growth of negative 1.0% to flat in 2018, Group Operating Profit (Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)) at approximately RM1.0 billion and Customer Satisfaction Measure of 72.”
At the same time, TM is also revising its capex guidance for this year between 20-22% of revenue, from the high 20s % guided earlier this year. This entails reprioritising its network spending and sweating of existing assets. With regard to expanding its coverage, TM will do so in the most efficient manner.
“In our ongoing transformation journey and to adapt to the changing landscape, TM has embarked on our 4th wave of Performance Improvement Programme 2018 (PIP 2018) which looks at 4 main pillars of Revenue Uplift, Sustained Profitability, Improved Cash Flow and Increased Productivity. We believe the strategic initiatives laid will assist TM in navigating through the current challenges and position us in a more resilient and competitive stead. The implementation of the PIP 2018 initiatives will provide us the runway to accelerate our current plans of convergence and digital,” he elaborated.
TM announced the introduction of its new Broadband and mobile plans to boost its market leadership position and deliver on the national broadband aspiration with respect to price, speed and coverage. The new plans are as detailed below:
1. A new affordable entry level unifi package at 30Mbps for targeted B40 segment. Lower income groups can access high-speed broadband through this package at a price point below RM100 (more than 40% lower price from the existing 30Mbps package). Registration for pre-booking starts 15 July 2018 via unifi.com.my.
2. unifi ‘turbo’ plans offering more than double the current broadband speed. TM will gradually upgrade the speed for all its existing unifi customers at more than double the speed at no extra cost starting 15 August 2018, while new customers subscribing to existing unifi plans before 31 December 2018 will also be upgraded accordingly in 2019.
3. Special package upgrade for pre-unifi (formerly known as Streamyx) customers in unifi areas nationwide. Eligibility status check will be available via unifi.com.my from 15 July 2018.
Note: All above are subject to technical availability in customers’ areas and terms & conditions.
4. A re-launch of its ‘unlimited’ unifi Mobile postpaid plan, which gives customers unlimited data, calls and messaging. This serves as a convergence offering exclusive to existing broadband customers and will be available at all unifi outlets and unifi.com.my from 15 July 2018.
“As Malaysia’s Convergence Champion, we believe that internet access is a critical enabler to grow our digital and creative economy towards making life and business easier for all. Today, we serve nearly 2 million broadband homes, more than 8 million individuals and connect more than 10 million devices nationwide. We hear what Malaysians want – faster internet connection at affordable prices, which has been our aspiration since the launch of unifi in 2010. In October 2016, we announced our Broadband Improvement Plan (BIP), with speed increase upgrades of up to 100Mbps at the same price and completed the exercise in 2017 to benefit close to 1 million broadband customers nationwide, including 323,000 pre-unifi customers. Currently, we have started contacting our pre-unifi customers in unifi areas for an upgrade to unifi plans. For others not in unifi areas, we will continuously invest in our network to provide at least our 30Mbps entry level unifi package through the latest fixed and wireless broadband technologies. Collectively, these new Broadband plans will catapult Malaysia beyond a majority of our regional peers into a competitive set of countries globally with high-speed broadband,” he added.
TM looks forward to continued resilience and sustainable growth following the implementation of the new strategic plans moving forward.

Better internet experience for Streamyx and unifi customers nationwide
TM Submits Plan to KKMM and MCMC On the back of the successful upgrade of 973,000 unifi customers to higher speeds, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today submitted a plan to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to address the remaining 934,000 Streamyx and unifi customers to further increase the overall coverage and internet quality of the nation. The announcement of the plan was made by Tuan Haji Rosli Man, Chairman of TM Group, at the press conference in conjunction with Kembara Digital Malaysia held in Ipoh. Also present at the event were YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communications and Multimedia; Dato’ Suriani Dato’ Ahmad, Secretary General of KKMM; Tuan Al-Ishsal Ishak, Chairman of MCMC; Dato’ Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM; and Imri Mokhtar, Chief Operating Officer, TM. TM intends to also seek support from Government of Malaysia for this implementation utilising existing funding to deliver better broadband services to rural and sub-urban areas, in line with the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP). TM will be addressing the copper network challenges via various technologies such as fibre, wireless and GigaWire in a network rollout which will involve a phased customer migration starting today until 2021. It is expected that 70% of these customers will be able to enjoy unifi services by end 2020. TM also announced a new entry level broadband package of up to 8Mbps at RM89 a month for residential customers. Meanwhile, existing Streamyx residential customers will enjoy this offer at RM69 a month. In addition, a wireless broadband alternative will be launched to address the issues faced by Streamyx customers today; while the network is being rolled out until 2021. Details will be announced very soon under its #khabarbaik programme. Tuan Haji Rosli said, “We are committed to resolve the Streamyx issues and believe that the plan is the way forward to address not only the limitation of the copper broadband network, but also to lay the foundation for a better internet experience for all existing and future customers nationwide. We look forward to a collaborative approach, working closely with the Government, Ministry and MCMC to effectively deliver high speed broadband experience towards realising Malaysia’s Digital Nation aspirations.” TM completed its internet upgrade programme in April 2019 with 973,000 unifi customers upgraded to 10 times the existing speed; 266,000 Streamyx customers in unifi coverage areas upgraded to unifi and 226,000 Streamyx customers in non-unifi coverage areas upgraded to 2 times existing speed where technology permits. This exercise has helped to uplift Malaysia’s position in global high speed connectivity rankings. In February 2019, the Speedtest Global Index by Ookla reported that fixed broadband download speeds in Malaysia increased by almost threefold to 70.18Mbps as compared to 22.26Mbps a year ago. Malaysia is now ranked 28th in the world as compared with 56th in 2017. Further, the MCMC has also reported that the number of fixed broadband subscriptions with download speeds of more than 100Mbps have risen tremendously from 150,000 in 2017 to 1.2 million subscribers in 2018.

unifi TV service disruption nationwide, service estimated to resume later this evening
At approximately 9:50pm on 3 January 2022, unifi TV services experienced service disruption nationwide due to impact to the power system triggered by a fire that affected the “Uninterruptible Power Supply” (UPS) equipment at TM IT Complex in Cyberjaya. The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) took control of the situation to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of the premises. We have received the necessary building assessment and clearance from Bomba at 4.00am. The building block was not in full operation at the time, with only a small number of employees on site. There have been no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and TM will fully cooperate with any investigation as required by authorities. An immediate announcement has been released on TM’s social media channels to notify our affected customers and we have since ramped up our customer service engagements to attend to calls and enquiries. This incident has caused unifi TV service interruptions affecting close to 300,000 of our unifi TV viewers. Other TM and unifi services are not affected. We are working tirelessly with our contractors and engineering teams to ensure that services are being restored gradually, with power restoration expected to be completed by 12 noon today. unifi TV is estimated to resume its services by 3.00pm today. However, TMpoint Cyberjaya will remain closed temporarily due to low power supply. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers, and will continue to prioritise the safety and well-being of our employees and contractors during this restoration process.
