Present to grace the launch were Dr. A. Bakar Sarpon, Deputy President of the Malaysian Institute of Integrity (IIM) and Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM. Also in attendance were Mohd. Khalis Abdul Rahim, Chief Human Capital Officer of TM and representatives from other GLCs.
In his welcoming speech, Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani emphasized the important role of GLCs in complementing the initiatives of the Government under the National Integrity Plan with regard to practicing integrity and ensuring compliance in their daily business operations.
“What we are doing today is really a natural progression and an outstanding added measure into the effort to heighten the level of appreciation for the content and spirit of the CBE. E-learning provides advantages to the whole learning and training experience for our staff, as the interactive and visual nature of e-learning makes it easier for staff to understand. The most obvious advantage of all, is that we are a broadband company, so it is only natural for us to encourage widespread use of this technology in day-to-day life. Being online, our staff can access the CBE and read the material even at home during their free time. All of this, fittingly for us, is made possible by broadband.”
TM first came up with the CBE in the form of a handbook that was introduced back in 2004. TM’s CBE is in line with its internal workplace core value statement of “Uncompromising Integrity” among every director, manager, executive and representative of TM. The CBE underlines uncompromising integrity and strong work ethics by outlining the acceptable and unacceptable behaviors and conduct in dealings with all stakeholders; be it the customers, vendors, partners, competitors, shareholders, the community as well as the Government and even competitors. In line with the CBE, all Executive Directors, members of Management and employees are required to declare their assets and interest in TM Group annually. The company expects every employee to adhere to high ethical standards and to promote ethical behavior. Apart from that, it also addresses the issues related to conflict of interest and the whistle-blowing policy. The Code also has clear guidelines to curb insider trading. The implementation of TM’s CBE forms part of the Company’s Corporate Responsibilities (CR) in the marketplace and the workplace.
To date, various programmes and activities related to TM’s CBE are held nationwide, such as training sessions, induction courses, road-shows and briefings, in order to inculcate ethical values amongst TM staff.
TM’s CBE e-Learning Programme has been developed in order to further emphasize the correct code of conduct and create awareness of positive workplace values. The e-learning programme is an interactive and dynamic module with features such as animated content, case studies, games and much more, which further encourages easier learning and clearer awareness. This module is also a collaborative effort with IIM in supporting the broader national agenda under the National Integrity Plan.
Dr. A. Bakar Sarpon in turn appealed to TM to continue the Company’s best practices in the workplace and share its success stories in order to inspire and initiate an environment of corporate integrity in Malaysia.
“As a leading GLC, the market expects TM to play a guiding role in matters of governance and ethical business conduct. This particular initiative should satisfy that need in its strategic intent, intellectual content and business outcome. Well-informed and trained TM internal stakeholders of its own code of business ethics will give rise to a well-governed corporation, which in turn will ensure its external demands are met satisfactorily.”
Following the launch of the CBE e-Learning Programme today, TM will also be developing a Bahasa Malaysia version of the programme for non-executive staff. The BM version of the CBE e-learning programme is expected to be launched next year.
In the broader picture, this is in line with TM’s CR platform encompassing the 4 dimensions of workplace, marketplace, community and environment.
The Company has always subscribed to corporate excellence with relentless pursuit to achieve continuous improvement and adopt best practices. As a testament to this, TM was recently accorded the ‘First Runner-Up Overall’ award at the Malaysian Business – CIMA Enterprise Governance Awards 2010. TM has been receiving the Governance Awards for three consecutive years. Meanwhile, in recognition of the Company’s commitment and untiring efforts towards promoting best practices at the workplace, TM won the prestigious 2009 PM’s CSR Award for best Workplace Practices.
