Present to flag off the ‘Traffic Monitoring Team’ and a convoy of motorcyclists and cars to emphasize the campaign’s message was YB Datuk Wira Abu Seman Haji Yusop, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security. Also present was Tan Sri Musa Tan Sri Hj. Hassan, Inspector General of Police, Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman of TM, Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM and other police officers of various ranks.
During the launch ceremony, Datuk Dr. Halim said: “It is a well-known fact that road safety is a ‘hot topic’ especially during holidays and festivities. TM employees are not excluded from becoming victims of road mishaps. These incidents certainly have an impact on us and make us realize on the importance of supporting and playing a more active role in assisting the Police to increase the awareness among the public and enforcement of road rules. Therefore, today’s campaign that we are launching is the result of the long-running collaboration between TM and PDRM.”
The Ops Sikap road safety campaign is held nationwide during festive seasons on a yearly basis to promote safe driving habits and a courteous attitude among road users. With the upcoming holidays and festivals, the road safety campaign is also aimed at increasing awareness amongst the public at large in ensuring a safe drive to their respective destinations. This year, with the theme of Selamat Sampai ke Destinasi, the campaign continues to focus on safe driving etiquette and road safety.
Four thousand police officers will be involved in the 22nd edition of Ops Sikap throughout the country to ensure safety on all roads during the festive season. Those involved in Ops Sikap would also comprise police from the districts, including patrol squads, district police chiefs to ensure the safety of road users during the month of Ramadan, especially during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Police personnel would also be stationed at more than 100 hot spots (accident prone areas) along federal roads and the Expressways as an initiative to reduce road accidents.
During Ops Sikap, traffic on roads are expected to increase by four to five folds as motorists join the balik kampung exodus to get to their destinations from cities and big towns, especially the densely populated Klang Valley.
TM is supporting the road safety campaign by providing 105 canopies with chairs, tables and a rechargeable lamp for the use of police officers on duty at strategic locations along accident prone areas nationwide. In addition, TM has also printed various publicity materials in support of the campaign which include 3,500 posters, 1,000 buntings, 50 banners, 7,000 car stickers, 20,000 motorcycle stickers, 10,000 PDRM Traffic Info Booklets and 400 iTalk prepaid calling cards to the Traffic Monitoring Team for their usage while carrying out the duties. The posters and booklets will be distributed to members of the public while the banners are to be placed at all major highways. In addition to these materials, advertisements will also be published in Malaysian mass media, bringing the message of the Ops Sikap campaign to the public in advocating safe driving skills.
TM hopes that its collaboration with PDRM in the Ops Sikap campaign will help to increase the level of awareness among the public on the importance of good driving habits and to encourage the involvement and understanding of motorists in ensuring a safe traveling experience for all.
