Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), in collaboration with the Government of Malaysia, today launched the Company’s latest broadband package for 1st or 2nd year tertiary students, called the Streamyx Cool UNI Pack. The package will offer students a combination of both a netbook and FREE broadband Internet access at just RM50 per month for 24 months.
The Streamyx Cool UNI Pack was officially launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak in conjunction with the Launch of Digital Pekan 1Malaysia at Dewan Konvensyen Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah in Pekan, Pahang. Also present at the launch was Y.B. Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, the Information, Communications and Culture Minister and Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Haji Adnan Yaakob, the Menteri Besar of Pahang as well as Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman of TM and Dato’ Zamzamzairani Mohd. Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM.
“We are enthusiastic about the introduction of this Streamyx Cool UNI Pack exclusively offered to university students which will be inclusive of a netbook with FREE broadband Internet access from only RM50 per month for 2 years. In addition, TM is also throwing in a FREE wireless modem, a FREE Streamyx Zone account and 50 songs download per month for 12 months from TM’s very own music portal, HyppTunes. That’s not all, as the students will also enjoy a 50% discount off the subscription rate on the 1st month subscription fee and we are also waiving the RM75 activation and RM88 installation fees for the package. However, for those who prefer higher bandwidth, they can opt for higher speed packages starting from 512Kbps to 4Mbps with minimal incremental fee of RM15 per month. This package is specially targeted at university students who would like to own a PC equipped with broadband but are on a budget. This new and affordable broadband PC package is aimed at increasing the PC and broadband penetration rate in line with the national agenda of increasing the country’s broadband penetration rate to 50% of households by the end of 2010,” said Dato’ Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.
“With already more than 1.5 million broadband subscribers in the country, TM is continuing its efforts to get as many Malaysians online through initiatives similar to this, which makes getting ‘connected’ easy and convenient. With this affordable PC bundle option, TM is stepping up its social investment strategy in championing the cause to support the government’s move towards achieving its goal for wider PC and broadband penetration that will plug Malaysia into the global knowledge grid and remain competitive with other countries. Apart from contributing towards increasing broadband adoption, the netbook package will also leverage on ICT as an enabler to support the government’s move to propel the country towards a knowledge-based society and enhance skilled human capital,” Dato’ Zamzamzairani elaborated.
In conjunction with the launch, 10 early adopters of the package comprising students from several public universities throughout the country received their netbooks from the Prime Minister at a presentation ceremony held during the launch.

In conjunction with the launch of TM’s Streamyx Cool UNI Pack, TM will be conducting road-shows at university campuses throughout the country to promote the package. To complement the package, TM will also be expanding its Streamyx Zone locations to cover the grounds of the universities to offer free wireless Internet access to all students.
TM currently has more than 2,000 Streamyx Zone locations nationwide at selected public places in major cities such as shopping malls, al fresco cafes, F&B outlets such as Pizza Hut, Secret Recipe and Burger King, airports, convention centres, hotels, university campuses, hospitals, golf club houses and many more. To spot a Streamyx Zone location, simply look out for the Streamyx Zone sign at your local eatery or shopping mall.
This service can be accessed with a laptop, PDA, Tablet PC or other mobile devices with standard Wi-Fi capability (802.11b/g wireless LAN standard) at any Streamyx Zone nationwide. Users can conveniently check their e-mail, browse the Internet, make phone calls via Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service, watch video streaming and blog, among others. Users only need to open their web browser and key-in their username and password. Once connected, users can enjoy broadband speeds of up to 384kbps and 100% mobility within the range of the access point.
Hypptunes is an online music portal, which offers legal full-track music downloading facilities with an array of songs from local and international artistes from a variety of music genres, ranging from ethnic, traditional to modern, classics to contemporary, local and international as well as music from mainstream and independent artists from around the world. It contains more than a hundred thousand songs from international and local artistes. Besides featuring a massive number of international songs, Hypptunes also supports the local independent music scene by providing music, event reviews and other related news on the local independent music scene. Furthermore, independent artiste can upload and showcase their songs via Hypptunes.
As part of the Digital Pekan 1Malaysia initiative, TM has been involved in several projects and is also providing its products and services for the benefits of the Pekan residents. Among them include an Experience Centre being set up in Pusat Sumber Pekan which is equipped with a computer and broadband Internet access service showcasing TM’s educational, informational and entertainment content such as the online newspaper service, e-Browse ( ebrowse.bluehyppo.com ), TM’s broadband TV portal Hypp.TV (www.hypp.tv ) and online education module, BlueHyppo Kidz (www.bluehyppo.com ). For the benefit of Pekan residents, TM is also providing FREE WiFi connectivity via Streamyx Zone at the Pekan Library and the Experience Centre for the public to access. In addition, TM has also equipped the Experience Centre with a kiosk connected to 2 wired internet access points as well as a one year access to TM’s BlueHyppo content and applications. As part of its continuous effort to encourage more broadband take up, TM has also introduced a special zero-entry cost Streamyx packages exclusively for all Pekan residents.
TM as the official strategic partner and platinum sponsor of the ICT Carnival held as part of the Digital Pekan 1Malaysia initiative from 30 until 31 January is showcasing the milestones of the Company’s involvement in Pekan and Pahang as well as promoting its broadband-related services for home and business consumers. Among the products on display such as Streamyx Cool UNI Pack, BlueHyppo Kidz Club, Hypp.TV, e-browse and mybizpoint. At the same event, TM also honoured 10 selected students from 10 top schools in Pekan for their excellent results in their PMR and UPSR examinations. The Prime Minister presented the tokens to all the high-achieving students at the TM booth. Each student received a cash token of RM200 and a TM school bag.
