schools and universities in the area as
well as transport organizations, Tan Sri
Dato’ Seri Ismail bin Haji Omar
also flagged off a convoy of motorcyclists,
cars and lorries to emphasize the campaign’s
message.
The Ops Sikap road safety campaign is
held nationwide during festive seasons
on a yearly basis to promote safe driving
habits and a courteous attitude among
road users. With the upcoming holidays
and festivals, the road safety campaign
is also aimed at increasing awareness
amongst the public at large in ensuring
a safe drive to their respective destinations.
This year, with the theme of “Pandu
Berhemat, Semua Selamat”, the campaign
will focus on safe driving etiquette and
road safety.
Motorcyclists will be the focus of roadblocks
under Ops Sikap XVII starting on Sept
24 in view of the festive period. PDRM
will focus on various offences during
Ops Sikap and these include driving along
emergency lanes, traffic light offences,
using mobile phones while driving and
queue-cutting. Heavy vehicles would not
be allowed along the highways on Sept
27-28 and on Oct 4-5.
During Ops Sikap, an estimated two million
motorists will join the "balik kampung"
exodus to get to their destinations from
cities and big towns, especially the densely
populated Klang Valley.
In addition to the nationwide launch,
the “Ops Sikap” campaign will
also be inaugurated at various states
by the respective State Police Chiefs
throughout the country from 24 September
until 1 October 2008.
TM is contributing RM250,000 in support
of the community campaign by providing
publicity materials which include 7,000
posters, 100 buntings, 50 banners, 8,000
car stickers, 30,000 motorcycle stickers
and 10,000 PDRM Traffic Info Booklets.
The posters and booklets will be distributed
to members of the public while the banners
are to be placed at all major highways.
In addition to these materials, advertisements
will also be published in Malaysian mass
media, bringing the message of the Ops
Sikap XVII campaign to the public in advocating
safe driving skills.
During the launch ceremony, Dato’
Adnan Rofiee, Chief Operating Officer,
TM Retail, TM said: “TM’s
long-running collaboration with PDRM emphasizes
our dedication to our community. Our commitment
to the Ops Sikap campaign is also part
of our Corporate Responsibility towards
the nation. In addition, TM has always
been committed to safety, within as well
as beyond the organization. Our involvement
with Ops Sikap XVII is part of our effort
to instil the values of patience, awareness
and alertness amongst all road users,
from bus drivers to motor-cyclists, and
subsequently, to decrease the number of
accidents on Malaysian roads, especially
during the ‘balik kampung’
rush.”
This is the eleventh consecutive year
that TM is participating as the sponsor
of Ops Sikap. TM hopes that its collaboration
with PDRM in the Ops Sikap XVII campaign
will help increase the level of awareness
among the public on the importance of
good driving habits and to encourage the
involvement and understanding of motorists
in ensuring a safe traveling experience
for all.
As a run-up to the launch, TM and PDRM
organized a carnival that ran from 21
to 23 September 2008 at Dataran Shah Alam.
Among the booths present at the carnival
included TM’s booths, which showcased
TM’s products and services, as well
as PDRM’s booth, which included
a counter for the payment of summons.
An exhibition on road safety was also
held at the carnival to remind members
of the public on the importance of positive
road usage.
