MORE AID FOR TM EMPLOYEES FLOOD VICTIMS
As a caring employer, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today lent a helping hand to its employees who were affected in the recent floods, particularly in Johor by giving away cash as well as in kind contributions. This is an additional assistance apart from the immediate cash relief that was given earlier to the victims.
The recent flood affected a total of 216 TM employees where 140 of them are from Johor. Another 62 are from Melaka, 11 from Negeri Sembilan, 2 from Pahang and one from the headquarters, Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking at the contribution-giving ceremony, Dato’ Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said: “TM employees who were affected were given immediate relief of RM500 cash earlier to help them in preparing for their school going children. Employees whose houses were severely affected by the flood will also receive financial assistance from the Group’s Staff Welfare Fund to help them to get back on their feet.”
“The Company then embarked on a donation drive internally for the victims and TM employees showed their caring nature and generosity as we managed to collect almost RM115,000,” added Dato Wahid.
“These victims today will be receiving an additional RM500 each from the donation drive. In addition, TM and its Group of companies namely Celcom and VADS are also contributing clothes such as t-shirts, kain batik, kain pelikat, towels, blankets and telekung worth up to RM15,000,” Dato’ Wahid further explained.
Earlier, TM allocated RM1 million to assist the flood victims in various parts of the country. This amount covered the distribution of 200,000 bottles of mineral water, food, clothing, mattresses and the use of TM’s fleet at the disposal of relief units as well as the use of telephone prepaid cards. In addition to this, rebates on telecommunication services to affected customers were also given. A SMS donation drive by Celcom also helped to bring in further cash assistance for the victims.
TM has also adopted 5 villages namely Kampung Renchong, Kampung Paya Limpah, Kampung Parit Pali, Kampung Parit Bulat and Kampung Parit Salman in Muar as an answer to the Government’s call towards the Kampung Angkat program which was launched by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development recently.
On 24 January 2007, a total of 200 TM employees, led by Dato’ Abdul Aziz Abu Bakar, Senior Vice President, Group Human Resource, TM, comprising 132 male and 68 female volunteers took the day off to help the victims at the 5 villages. They helped the villagers to clean their homes, mosques, surau, kindergarten and schools. They also rendered assistance in repairing damages to their properties.
TM also contributed clothes and prayers items that were donated by TM employees throughout the country to the villagers. Residents of Kampung Renchong and Kampung Paya Limpah who were severely affected by the flood received financial assistance from the TM Group, collected through a SMS donation campaign driven by Celcom recently. Each family from the two villages received RM150, totaling up to more than RM10,000.
“Our employees’ welfare is our top priority hence we do not take this natural disaster lightly. This disaster has left a major effect on the victims and we at TM will join together to assist the victims in rebuilding their lives in any way we can,” concluded Dato’ Wahid.
