TM LENDS A HELPING HAND TO FLOOD VICTIMS IN JOHOR

In the spirit of volunteerism, four bus-loads of volunteers from Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today left Kuala Lumpur at
7am for Muar with the sole mission of lending a helping hand to flood victims in Johor, to bring back some sense of normalcy to their lives.

Led by Dato’ Abdul Aziz Abu Bakar, Senior Vice President, Group Human Resource, TM, a total of 200 TM employees comprising 132 male and 68 female volunteers took the day off to help the victims. They came from various departments across the Group, including subsidiaries such as Celcom, TM International, TM R&D and GITN.

This is also TM’s answer to the Government’s call towards the Kampung Angkat program which was launched by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development recently. TM has adopted 5 villages namely Kampung Renchong, Kampung Paya Limpah, Kampung Parit Pali, Kampung Parit Bulat and Kampung Parit Salman. A total of 128 families in the villages were affected in the recent floods.

Upon arriving at the villages, the volunteers helped the villagers to clean their homes, mosques, surau, kindergarten and schools. They also rendered assistance in repairing damages to their properties.

In addition, TM contributed clothes and prayers items that were donated by TM employees throughout the country. The Red Crescent Society of Malaysia’s standard disaster pack comprising sanitary items and groceries were also given away. Residents of Kampung Renchong and Kampung Paya Limpah who were severely affected by the flood received financial assistance from the TM Group, collected through a SMS donation campaign driven by Celcom recently. Each family from the two villages received RM150, totaling up to more than RM10,000.

Dato’ Abdul Aziz said: “We deeply sympathize with the victims and we hope TM’s assistance and contribution can alleviate their burden in any way possible and help them get back on their feet.”

Earlier, TM allocated RM1 million to assist the flood victims in various parts of the country. This amount covered the distribution of more than 100,000 bottles of mineral water, food, clothing, mattresses and the use of TM’s fleet at the disposal of relief units as well as the use of telephone prepaid cards. In addition to this, rebates on telecommunication services to affected customers were also given. A SMS donation drive by Celcom also helped to bring in further cash assistance for the victims.
