Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) yesterday clinched for the first time the Overall Excellence Award for the most outstanding Annual Report of the Year 2005 for excellence in annual reporting. TM beat more than 500 listed companies for the Overall Excellence Award. It is presented to organizations whose Annual Reports meet the criteria set for excellence in annual corporate reporting. These criteria include the provisioning of a comprehensive overview of the company; its vision, mission, ethical values, corporate plan, objectives and strategies for achieving those objectives; detailed explanation of the organisation’s operations; the experience level of the Board of Directors and Management ; relevant and reliable financial information exceeding the mandatory requirements; corporate governance; additional disclosures beyond the statutory requirements; supplementary information such as explanation of the organisation’s environmental policy, health and safety measures and finally presented in a concise, logical and easy to understand format.

Jointly organised by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), The Malaysian Institute of Certificate Public Accountants (MICPA) and the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM), the National Annual Corporate Report Awards (NACRA) is a prestigious award in recognition of excellence in annual corporate reporting for corporates in Malaysia.

Speaking after receiving the awards, Dato’ Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM said : “We are delighted to have won 4 awards this year especially the Overall Excellence Award. Against the backdrop of strong competition and the stringent criteria set by the Adjudication Committee for selecting award recipients, it is indeed a great accomplishment for the TM Group.  It is not only recognition of the high quality of reporting but also shows TM’s commitment in providing relevant and reliable information to all our stakeholders.”

Corporate Governance Survey 2005 Award
TM was also recently awarded Corporate Governance Survey 2005 Award from the Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG) in which TM emerged as the 2nd runner up.

“The receipt of this award complements the NACRA recognition as it is a testimony of TM’s commitment towards upholding the highest levels of corporate governance. Given to companies for their high level of compliance to the local and international corporate governance standards, this also reinforces TM’s emphasis on the best practices in corporate governance,” said Dato Wahid.

CSR Award
On the international front, TM is also proud to announce that its subsidiary in Sri Lanka, Dialog Telekom received the overall award for the best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program at the Vodafone Corporate Responsibility workshop held in Cairo last week. More than 30 Vodafone subsidiaries and partner networks took part in the workshop and Dialog emerged as the winner for its six (6) CSR initiatives. These initiatives among others include the CHANGE Trust Fund, Dialog’s key community initiative in which subscribers are invited to donate one half of one per cent (0.5%) of their Dialog GSM bill to the Fund, with Dialog making a matching donation. The money is then disbursed to disadvantaged sectors of society through various Government-approved charities. Other initiatives include the Disaster and Emergency Network (DEWN), a R&D program to develop a reliable early warning system for the country and the SMS 112 service which provides those with hearing and speech impairment access to emergency services.

“We are excited with our achievements and this gives us further encouragement to step up our transformation efforts,” concluded Dato’ Wahid.
