TM SUPPORTS WORLD’S TOUGHEST MOUNTAIN RACE

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), as a responsible corporate organisation, has always at the forefront in supporting sporting events, not only at the national level, but also the international arena. Its latest activity is the TM 20th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon 2006 where TM is the Title Sponsor.

The race, dubbed as the world’s toughest mountain race, will be held from 30 September to 1 October 2006. It has attracted 252 elite mountain runners from around the globe including Australia, Kenya, Nepal, Britain, Japan, Italy, Spain, France, Hong Kong, Brunei and Singapore.

This sponsorship is testament of TM’s efforts towards encouraging healthy lifestyle among Malaysians through sports activities, in addition to putting Malaysia on the international map as a destination for sports tourism.

This forms a part of TM’s larger Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. TM adopts a three-pronged approach in its CSR practice, namely support of sports development, education, as well as community and nation building activities. For its sports activities, TM is the title sponsor of Liga Malaysia which has positioned TM as a major player in the nation’s football arena. The Group was also the main sponsor for numerous events such as the Le Tour de Langkawi bicycle race, the Monsoon Cup, a premier world yacht race and the MyTEAM, a reality programme that uncovered hidden talents among young Malaysian footballers across the nation.

In addition to sports, TM also focuses its CSR on two other platforms – education and nation-building. On the education platform, the bulk of the contribution goes to TM’s education facilities namely Multimedia University (MMU), TM Multimedia College (MMC) and the Yayasan TM to facilitate the education and training of the nation’s ICT workforce as well as to provide grants/funds for bright and needy students. As a responsible caring corporate citizen, TM continues to play a major role in contributing to the well-being of the community and society at large with the aim of reducing the digital divide through its various Universal Service Provisioning (USP) projects in providing for rural telephony.

More importantly, in conjunction with this event, TM’s cellular arm, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad (Celcom) is now powering the 3G coverage at the summit of Mount Kinabalu, Low’s Peak, as well as the adjacent areas along the main trail encompassing Laban Rata and Gunting Lagadan. The pioneering of 3G coverage at the highest peak in South East Asia, makes Celcom the provider of the highest 3G coverage in the world.

With this development, Celcom subscribers can now broadcast their experience of the climb live via Celcom 3G. Celcom is the first mobile operator to launch the 3G service in Malaysia and has the widest 3G coverage in the country with availability in all states and covers over 50% of populated areas.

Besides 3G services, TM has also installed a payphone at Sayat-Sayat which makes it the highest payphone in Malaysia for climbers’ convenience.

As the Title Sponsor, TM will hold TM Fiesta in conjunction with this annual mountain race. TM Group will be showcasing its latest products and services promotions including Celcom 3G, Mobile Homeline, iTalk with Mobile and tmnet streamyx. Various interesting activities have also been lined up for the visitors to take part including lucky draw, “Roda Impian TM”, quiz and karaoke which they can take away attractive prizes. Besides that, Yazer of AF3 will be entertaining the crowd during the 2-day Fiesta.

Members of the public are welcomed to visit TM Fiesta and join the activities which will be held at Kinabalu Park, Kundasang from 30 September to 1 October 2006.
