TM CONTRIBUTES TO THE JOURNALISM INDUSTRY
In acknowledging the importance of enhancing journalists’ skills, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) in collaboration with National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJ) is organising a two-day workshop for the journalists from the local media houses from 7 to 8 September 2006.
The workshop, entitled “Conflict Reporting Workshop” is aimed at enriching the journalists’ knowledge on how to report a conflict as well as enhancing the journalists’ understanding on conflict situations, the do’s and don’ts and getting prepared for such situations from the experience of other journalists.
A total of twenty-two (22) journalists representing the local media houses including the NSTP Group, The Star, The Sun, Utusan Malaysia, Nanyang Siang Pau and Kwong Wah Yit Poh is participating in this workshop.
Speaking at the opening ceremony today, Dato’ Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer, Celcom (M) Berhad said: “As we are becoming increasingly aware, journalists may be assigned not only to cover corporate events, but also of late assigned to cover conflicts and disasters. In view of this, both TM and NUJ believe that, with the current global situation of rising conflicts and disasters, a Conflict Reporting Workshop is not only timely but most relevant today.”
“This workshop is also a win-win arrangement for both TM and the media houses. By participating, you are able to enhance your skill and knowledge. On the other hand, this is a great opportunity for us at TM to get to know, network and build better relationship with the journalists, as what we have today,” added Dato’ Shazalli.
In his speech, officiating the workshop, YB. Datuk Zainuddin Maidin, Minister of Information said: “I am proud of TM’s initiatives towards the development of the nation’s human capital, an specifically, towards the professional development of journalists in Malaysia. Workshops of this nature are truly beneficial for the self-improvement and knowledge enrichment of our journalists. I am looking forward to more corporate involvement towards human capital development.”
This is the second in a series of workshops organised by TM. The first one was conducted in December last year for journalists in the Northern region, specifically from Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak. TM plans to make this workshop series as an annual event and the Company views it as its continuous contribution to the journalism industry. It is hoped that the workshop will be of benefit not only to the journalists but also to their respective organizations as well. TM as a corporate organisation mindful of its social responsibilities, has always played an important role in the field of education and training.
