TELEKOM MALAYSIA REROUTES CALLS TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA

In its latest effort to curb the menace of Internet Dumping, Telekom Malaysia announced that effective today all IDD calls to Papua New Guinea (PNG) will be rerouted through 108, its Operator Assisted International Services. If customers still dial directly to PNG, the calls will automatically be routed to 108.

Internet Dumping, or sometimes referred to as Modem Jacking, occurs when a web site purposely disconnects a user from his local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and reconnects the user through another one, usually using an international or premium rate number. The web site might even ask the user’s permission first, but it may be written in small print amongst other information, and the first time users may know about it is when they receive a high telephone bill. Hence, users may be unaware that their high telephone bills are due to accessing certain websites.

This problem occurs mostly on adult and entertainment sites, and since most of these sites currently are hosted in PNG, Telekom Malaysia has resorted to this measure to keep a check on this problem. Customers who wish to make calls to PNG will now have to call 108 for their calls to be connected. Only genuine calls will be connected and the normal service charge of RM5.00 per call which is usually levied for successful outgoing calls connected by the operators will be waived for these calls. However, calls to Papua New Guinea requesting to be connected to these websites will not be put through.

Customers are advised to call 108 or Telekom Customer Call Centre at 1050 for any enquiries regarding their IDD calls.
